The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
The meaning of this simple sentence goes very deep when you think about it.It means that you create your destiny. How? Simply by deciding and taking action. Once you decide, you already created your destiny. No one can change your future.
With the power of your decision, you create and with your will you persist. It makes us ask “Isn’t it the contrary? Aren’t we forced to follow our destiny. Don’t the circumstances pave a path for us? Aren’t we doomed to follow this path we call destiny?”
Some of us might say “No!” Some will say “Of course. Wasn’t it always that way?”
Or perhaps we live in a world where both points of view exist at the same time? Can this be true? If both exist, then do we swing between the two? We decide, take action then the circumstances interfere. They push or pull us in another direction.
Whatever we believe in, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s words put us in control of our lives. It makes us responsible of our actions. Hence, we avoid blaming anyone but ourselves by accepting the result.
Otherwise, we can easily blame our environment, the society or anything we can think of. We end up saying either “What’s the use?” or “I’ll wait until the (blank) changes.”
What do you think ? Can we really choose our destiny just by deciding? Do we have to accept whatever our society has chosen for us?
